Streets Ice Cream - Innovation & Market Strategy
The brief was to pick a real company, analyse their current innovations, and propose a new one. We chose Streets Ice Cream, Unilever's dominant Australian ice cream brand, and tried to think like product strategists rather than students writing a report.
What I did: a 4Ps competitive analysis against Baskin Robbins and Dairy Bell, a PESTLE and SWOT review, and evaluation of two live Streets innovations - the shift to plant-based options and the sustainable packaging push (diverting 3,000+ tonnes of waste annually). Then a proposed innovation targeting the personalised/customisable category, a space none of the main competitors had credibly addressed.
What I learned about innovation strategy: the right move is always context-dependent. The vegan product line and sustainability push aren't just trend-chasing - they're simultaneously compliance moves, cost plays, and brand assets. Understanding why a company does something tells you more about their strategy than what they do.
Key insight: Streets' positioning (broad distribution, accessible price points, low-to-middle income targeting) is defensible, but it leaves them exposed on the premium end. A personalised offering is one credible path to move up the value chain without abandoning the core. Identifying that gap was the real output of the analysis.
